The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission will bestow $7.6 million
to Southeastern Pennsylvania via the federal Transportation Alternatives
Program (TAP) for 11 new construction passages. Among the proposed projects
are a number of improvements to the ambitious Philadelphia Circuit Trail
construction, along with other safety and awareness efforts.
Much of the money will go to The Circuit Trails, which, when completed,
will connect a massive network of bicycling and pedestrian trails throughout
greater Philadelphia. The proposed projects include:
- Cross Country Trail construction in Fort Washington
- 24-hour lighting for the Manayunk Bridge
- Neshaminy Greenway Trail construction (in New Britain, Doylestown, and Chalfont)
- Extension of the Power Line Trail in Montgomeryville (to better connect
with Route 202 Trail)
"These eleven projects will enable communities to build multi-use
trails, safe routes to school and pedestrian pathways, and bike lanes
and bikeway projects, providing transportation options for a wide variety
of users throughout our region," said DVRPC Executive Director Barry
Seymour in a press release. "This is one more step in our ongoing
efforts to implement The Circuit, the region’s ambitious plan for
a 750-mile network of connected trails."
Safety & Awareness
Beyond the TAP construction projects, the DVRPC grant will also benefit
bicycle safety and awareness projects. $300K will go to Safe Spaces for
Cyclists: Building a Protected Bicycle Network, an initiative aimed at
bringing better signage, pavement markings, and flexible delineator posts
throughout Philadelphia.
Funding will also be provided to Safe Routes Philly, a program of the Philadelphia
Bicycle Coalition aimed at bringing alternative, healthy forms of transportation
awareness to the city's elementary schools. The money will be used
to further this education and outreach and to fund street and sidewalk
improvements.
