Leadership in Cycling Community for 35+ Years

Attorney Joe Piscitello is actively involved with Philadelphia's cycling community both professionally and personally. His advocacy and support of the cycling community has been recognized by the Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia on several occasions.

Piscitello Law is a personal injury firm recognized in the tri state area for their expertise in cycling and pedestrian legal matters. Our attorneys are not only seasoned litigators—they are active cyclists who understand the realities of riding on today’s roads. That lived experience fuels our passion for the intersection of bikes, safety, and the law, and it shapes the way we advocate for every injured rider and vulnerable road user.

We are committed to representing victims of preventable traffic crashes in the most effective and aggressive manner, while ensuring that our clients and families feel supported throughout the process. The firm’s focus on these cases has grown alongside the rising number of people across Pennsylvania who rely on bicycles for daily life, making the firm a trusted resource for riders and families statewide.

The father-and-son team of Joseph and Michael Piscitello are dedicated to cycling and pedestrian advocacy in the region. They have formed significant collaborations with leading bicycle and community organizations at the local, state, and national level. Piscitello Law is an active sponsor of teams and events that develop young athletes and get more kids on bikes. Through their bike law talks and podcasts, they educate cyclists on their rights, how to avoid crashes, and the importance of having proper levels of auto policy insurance. The firm collaborates with local and state advocates, working to change laws to provide stronger protections for people who move through the world on two wheels. Joe Piscitello serves on the Board of Directors for PA Safe Roads PAC and has been to Harrisburg several times to lobby for change.

Personal Injury Statistics for Bicycle & Pedestrians in Philadelphia & Throughout Pennsylvania

Updated crash data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) shows that traffic crashes remain a serious public safety concern across the Commonwealth:

  • In 2024, Pennsylvania recorded more than 110,000 reportable traffic crashes, with 1,127 total fatalities statewide — one of the lowest totals on record, but still representing hundreds of lives lost on Pennsylvania roads.
  • Specific statewide figures for pedestrians and bicyclists released so far show that bicycle-involved crashes (2023 data) included around 1,100 total bicycle crashes, resulting in 27 bicyclist fatalities and over 900 suspected serious injuries.
  • Philadelphia-specific data from the 2024 Vision Zero Annual Report indicates that as of October 2024, there were 84 fatal crashes in the city — down from the previous year — but serious crashes involving vulnerable road users remain a community focus.

These figures highlight ongoing trends: while total statewide traffic fatalities are near historic lows, pedestrians and cyclists still face significant risk on Pennsylvania streets. Efforts at the state and local levels continue to emphasize education, enforcement, and infrastructure improvements to reduce serious injuries and deaths among vulnerable road users.

Personal Injury Statistics for Bicycle & Pedestrians in New Jersey

Recent data from the New Jersey State Police and safety-focused groups shows concerning trends for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the Garden State:

  • In 2024, New Jersey experienced a sharp rise in traffic deaths involving vulnerable road users, with 218 pedestrian fatalities — one of the highest totals in decades.
  • Cyclist fatalities in the state also remain elevated, with preliminary data showing 25 bicyclists killed on New Jersey roadways in 2024.
  • Combined, pedestrians and bicyclists made up a significant portion of overall traffic fatalities as the state grapples with rising crash severity despite ongoing safety initiatives.

In response to these trends, New Jersey policymakers and safety advocates have launched programs like the Target Zero Commission, designed to develop a statewide action plan by the end of 2025 aimed at reducing traffic fatalities — including those involving cyclists and pedestrians — to zero.

What the Data Indicates

Between Pennsylvania and New Jersey:

  • Both states show continuing risks to bicyclists and pedestrians, even as overall traffic fatalities fluctuate year to year.
  • Recent increases in pedestrian deaths in New Jersey underscore the need for enhanced safety measures, education, and street design changes.
  • Pennsylvania’s lower overall fatality counts are encouraging but do not negate the serious injuries and loss of life that occur among cyclists and pedestrians each year.

Together, these statistics highlight the importance of continued advocacy, improved infrastructure, and comprehensive safety strategies to protect all road users — particularly bicyclists and pedestrians — across both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

How Can Our Philadelphia Injury Attorney Help You?

It’s absolutely imperative to immediately visit the scene of an accident and photograph the surroundings from all angles. Oftentimes our attorney combines a bike ride with a bike-mounted camera to document evidence with video and still photos. These depictions of the accident scene are later used in depositions to help clients articulate precisely what happened. All cases at Piscitello Law are reviewed weekly in a staff Case Management Review meeting which helps to ensure that they are properly followed and pushed forward on a weekly basis.

Another important aspect of investigating any accident is to retain appropriate expert witnesses. Not only do we utilize engineers with reconstruction backgrounds, but our firm also retains expert physicians who are capable of connecting specific injuries to the mechanics of how they were sustained. While these experts are being retained, it is important to keep our clients up-to-date on their case progress as well as any future steps which must occur prior to settlement or trial.

These high standards set our Philadelphia personal injury firm apart. If you've been hurt, contact us online today or call our office at (215) 372-8768 to request a free case evaluation!
