Harrisburg Bicycle Club 2025

Harrisburg Bicycle Club

Camp Hill, PA | March 11, 2025

We were delighted to present to the Harrisburg Bicycle Club in March 2025.  This was our second presentation to this fabulous club. The first one that we did was in March 2023.  Thanks to Rodney Bender who invited us back and to the HBC president Marie Roof who warmly welcomed us.

This Bike Law talk began with an overview of legislation that we are actively supporting, including Parking Protected Bike Lanes, expanded use of automated speed cameras and the Jay Alert hit and run notification.  We had just wrapped up a very successful event at the Philadelphia Bike Expo (March 8) and had lots of great posters and materials to share with HBC including the one below.

The second half of our talk included a discussion of the main types of crash events and how to best avoid them. We watched several horrifying crash videos that illustrate the dangers of riding with traffic and discussed defensive driving. This section of the talk always creates a lively conversation about how to avoid these events and what to do if club members are involved in a crash. Lastly, we made the pitch to review auto insurance policies so that club members have under and un-insurance coverage. That coverage protects cyclists if/when they are hit by a driver who flees the scene (which happens frequently) or a driver with little insurance.

HBC members shared several club updates and discussed their role with the Ride of Silence in Harrisburg. An annual event meant to draw attention to cyclists who lose their lives in preventable crash events.  HBC member and Smart Cycling instructor Dick Norford shared an update on the course that he provides on behalf of HBC. The program includes a 2 hour classroom session and a 2 hour bike safety drill and check ride. This course is part of the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling Course with the mission to teach bike skills and build confidence. More info here on the Smart Cycling course provided by HBC member, Dick Norford.  At the end of the seminar, we had plenty of time to chat with members of Harrisburg Bicycle Club.  We sincerely appreciate opportunities like these to connect with fellow cyclists and advocates in Harrisburg!
